Empowering Deaf Futures: The Launch of Access Learning Lab

Virra C

Accessifiers proudly launched its first Access Learning Lab at the Bohol Deaf Academy (BDA), a partner school in Tagbilaran City, Bohol, Philippines. This groundbreaking initiative aims to transform Deaf students into self-sufficient individuals capable of generating income through digital creations. By fostering tech skills, leadership, and entrepreneurial mindsets, the program aspires to equip Deaf students, initially focusing on Grades 11 and 12, with the tools they need for higher-paying jobs and self-sufficiency. This project not only enhances access to technology but also promotes innovation, with plans for future expansion to other Deaf communities.

The executive director of Accessifiers, Norman, traveled from the USA to personally oversee the creation of this transformative space. With the collaboration of the BDA staff and IDEA Philippines' computer technicians, the lab underwent a major upgrade. Outdated desktop computers with bulky CPUs were replaced with sleek laptops, connected to existing monitors for dual-screen functionality. A new 55-inch smart TV replaced the older model, and the lab was outfitted with a 360-degree wide-angle camera, complete with built-in speakers and a microphone, ensuring an immersive experience for both local and remote classes.

During the turnover ceremony, Norman warmly welcomed the BDA administrators, teachers, and students to the newly upgraded lab. He introduced the lab's features, explained the rules for using the equipment, and provided hands-on guidance on key functions like signing into accounts, navigating Windows 11, adjusting display settings, and using laptops efficiently, including touchpad and function key tips. This session set the stage for smooth and effective use of the lab's resources.
